Road Trip Radio Report: Titusville to Savannah, 8 April 2021

Yesterday was the conclusion of the short road trip that began on 7 April; my folks and I visited the Merritt Island NWR then made the drive back to Savannah from Titusville, FL. Once again, we stayed at the Holiday Inn Kennedy Space Center, just off of I-95 (I highly recommend it). On this visit, I had the scenic view of I-95 from the room’s window, but it wasn’t so bad because that meant that the radio antennas were facing Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Once again, my timing was terrible, because early yesterday morning I caught a Volga-Dnepr An-124 going into the Shuttle Landing Facility at KSC; if it had been a couple of hours later, we would have been at the Refuge near the SLF and probably would have gotten eyes on the An-124. While visiting the refuge and driving around Titusville, I had the BCD436HP running with the mag-mount antenna like the day before and I had the TRX-1 scanning/recording in the side pocket of my backpack in the back seat.

The view from the hotel was of I-95, but it turned out to be a good thing as it gave the radios a clear shot at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station

Logs from the yesterday’s time at the hotel and on the road are below (Note: enc = encrypted, unenc = unencrypted). 246.900 and 306.000 were very busy yesterday morning while I was in the Titusville area with airspace deconfliction communications from VP-30 and VP-26 P-8A Poseidons from NAS Jacksonville. F-15Cs from the 125th FW at Jacksonville IAP as well as some A-10s from Moody AFB (I never caught their callsigns) worked Pinecastle Range throughout the morning.

As far as the visit to the Refuge went, I was surprised that we didn’t see more than we did. For the most part, we saw a lot of Tri-Colored Herons and Great Blue Herons, a number of small to medium sized Alligators, and an assortment of small shore birds. We missed seeing any Reddish Egrets or Roseate Spoonbills. We were surprised, however, to see a few straggling Blue Winged Teal; we expected all of them to have migrated back north by now.
