March was a very interesting month for Military Monitoring in the Coastal Georgia area. It was quite an active month with some new arrivals at Hunter AAF, a variety of visiting units to spice things up ,and a couple of local area units returning from deployments. A weekend trip to Charleston also resulted in some USAF (57) TRS logs. Highlights of the month were:

• 3-17 CAV takes delivery of some new AH-64Es (only have the tail number on one of the three that arrived)
• The 175th FS, South Dakota ANG continued to operate out of the Savannah ADC and was replaced at the end of the month by the 457th FS, Texas ANG
• VMFA(AW)-533 and VMFA-312 returned to MCAS Beaufort from UDPs to Japan
• Aircraft from the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) Amphibious Group worked in the area
• HMHT-302 CH-53Es worked out of Hunter AAF

The most interesting catch of the month came on 30 March 2020, when I caught an E-8C and a P-8 doing parallel orbits along the Savannah River. PHENOM 02 (E-8C, 97-0201, 116th/461st ACW) was in the orbit for much of the afternoon, shifting slightly south just before SHINER 02 (P-8A, 167952, VX-1) arrived and took the northern of the two orbits (as seen in the tracks below). After a few more turns in its orbit, PHENOM 02 departed and SHINER 02 continued to orbit until it broke station and departed for Hunter AAF. It has been suggested that the two aircraft could have been part of a comparison test between the JSTARS radar system and the AN/APS-154 system that the P-8 can carry.
